Offspring Entertainment and Walt Disney Pictures have begun production on the Nicholas Sparks feature film, "The Last Song" starring Miley Cyrus. Miley's mother, Tish Cyrus will executive produce, Adam Shankman and his sister Jennifer Gibgot will handle production for Offspring Entertainment.
Principal photography began June 15, 2009 (the Hannah Montana TV series wrapped in May) and will run through August 20, 2009. The filming locations are in Savannah, Georgia and other nearby coastal locales. Julie Anne Robinson (Pushing Daisies, Grey's Anatomy, Samantha Who, Coming Down the Mountain) is directing.
Offspring Entertainment and Walt Disney Pictures are scheduled to begin working on another project called "Fear Phil" after this film wraps up production.

These roles have now been cast in Savannah Georgia:Pastor Harris: 60-70-years-old. Any ethnicity. A mentor to the Steve Miller character who is Ronnie’s (Miley Cyrus’) father. Injured in the local church fire, he continues to be an inspiration to Steve and the community as they rebuild the church. He is a kindly, devout pastor.
Cassie: 18-years-old. Any ethnicity. The Ashley character’s friend and cohort. Attractive cheerleader type. Part of Ashley’s clique, Cassie openly disapproves of Ronnie’s relationship with Will. She’s also smart enough to be interning in the DA’s office. This pays off when she sees Ronnie get sentenced for jail time, information that she takes right to Ashley and then right to Will’s mother during her daughter’s wedding. She’s conniving.
Megan: Will’s sister. Ages 22-24. Attractive. Megan is an old soul who’s been through a lot with her brother and they developed a special bond dealing with the loss of their younger brother, Mikey. During her wedding she is the only one of the Blakelees that shows Ronnie any warmth.
Megan’s husband: Ages 25-27. Attractive. Megan’s new husband dances with her during their wedding.
Judge: Male or female. 50-60-years-old. Ethnic. A judge sets a hearing for Ronnie for shoplifting.
Lawyer: Male or female. 30-45-years-old. Any ethnicity. A Lawyer represents Ronnie on her shoplifting trial.
Teddy: 18-20-years-old. Tattooed and pierced street thugs and part of Marcus’ crew, Teddy is adept at hackeysac, juggling, and break dancing as part of a show they put on at the warf to earn money. Must be able to breakdance, juggle and play Hakey Sac. (SAG role.)
Lance: 18-20-years-old. Tattooed and pierced street thugs and part of Marcs’ crew, Lance is adapt at hackeysac, juggling, and break dancing as part of a show they put on at the wharf to earn money. Must be able to breakdance, juggle and play Hakey Sac. (SAG role.)
Little kid: Male or female. 5-years-old, who can cry. When Marcus’ crew rough houses, they accidentally knock down a small boy or girl. Ronnie rushes over to save him.
Kid’s mother: At the sight of her kid being knocked down, his mother rushes over and thankfully takes him from Ronnie.
